What is a Cavity Wall?

The cold weather calls for sweaters, but did you know that your home can have the same treatment? Odds are that inside your brick walls, there is a small area called the cavity. This area of your wall can store insulation in order to cut energy bills and keep your home at proper temperatures. How do you find out if this is applicable to you? Let the Orlando paver experts at Bedrock explain how cavity wall insulation within your brick home can help lower your next energy bill.

How It Works

Just as you wear an extra coat on a cold day, the insulation of your cavity wall keeps your cold or warm air inside of your home. With an empty cavity, your conditioned air is more likely to seep through your walls without anything to trap it.

Identifying a Cavity Wall

You can see for yourself if you’re eligible for cavity wall insulators. Take a look at your outside brick wall. If the pattern of your bricks looks exactly the same, there’s a good chance that you have a cavity wall. Vice versa, if you see that the pattern of your outdoor brick wall is not the same (meaning you can see both the long side and short side of bricks) chances are that you have a solid wall which does not have an open area. If you have a solid wall, your home was built pre-1920. Cavity walls are typically found in more modern homes.

Determining if a Cavity Wall is Insulated

It may be possible that a previous owner installed cavity insulation, so if you’ve discovered that you have cavity walls, the next step is to analyze if there has been any previous insulation installation. How can you do this? The easiest way is to take another look at your exterior brick wall. If you’ve noticed that there are small drill holes that have been filled in the mortar between your bricks, that can be a signal of previous insulation installation. The installer blows insulation into the brick wall by using this hole. If there’s no sign of these small holes that have been filled, odds are that the cavity of your wall is not insulated.
