How to Whitewash Your Brick Fireplace in Seven Steps

We understand, trends rule, and whitewash is definitely trending this fall. While your fireplace is probably beautiful as is, if you are looking for a new fresh look, you’ve come to the right place. Lately, you’re seeing that nice vintage chalky touch on bricks, and now it’s your turn to make it happen in your house. But how do they get that whitewash finish on the clay bricks? Our Orlando Masonry experts have compiled some easy guidelines for you to follow. Oh, and the good news is that this is not a tough job at all, so you can have this project done in a weekend at an inexpensive cost. Shall we begin?

Preparation – Materials & Tools

  • Cardboard or papers
  • Painter’s tape
  • Trisodium phosphate
  • Scrub brush

Preparation – Instructions

STEP #1: Clean the surface of the bricks (grout included) thoroughly using the trisodium phosphate and the scrub brush. Pay special attention to the ash stains around the fireplace opening and remove with care. Rinse the fireplace surface with clean water, and let it dry.

STEP #2: In case the bricks have been previously painted, make sure there are no chipping areas. If this is the case, prime the damaged areas before we move on to the next step.

STEP# 3: Use the painter’s tape and some paper to protect any walls or cabinets around the fireplace including the floor. It’s also recommended to cover the firebox to avoid that area from being spray painted. It’s preferably to leave that area unfinished.

Whitewash Application – Materials & Tools

  • Cotton rags
  • Water spray bottle
  • White interior flat latex paint and primer
  • Mixing bucket
  • Sash brush

Whitewash Application – Instructions

STEP #4: Moisten the bricks using the water spray bottle without leaving drips. While the surface is moist, load the cotton rug with thinned paint and wipe it on the humidified brick surface.

STEP #5: If the edges around the brick and the grout don’t get well covered with the paint, use a sash brush to fill in and reach those areas.

STEP #6: For those bricks with too much color, spray some water over them and remove the excess paint to even them out to match the rest of the surface.

STEP #7: Let it dry overnight.
